TAXONOMY AND AFFINITIES OF AFRICAN CENOZOIC METATHERIANS

چکیده

The record of extinct African metatherians (Mammalia, Theria) is scanty, restricted in time (Eocene–Miocene), and its taxonomy still subject debate. A review all metatherians, or alleged known up to now, led us the recognition only three taxa referable this group: (1)  Kasserinotherium tunisiense  (Peradectoidea?), from early Eocene Tunisia; (2)  Peratherium africanum  (Herpetotheriidae), Oligocene Egypt Oman, (3) an indeterminate Herpetotheriidae? Miocene Uganda. Herpetotheriids probably reached Afro-Arabia Europe one more dispersal waves since Oligocene.  , on contrary, suggests earlier (Paleocene) arrival South America, judging affinities with American Australian taxa. Such a migration event (probably, through filter corridor such as Rio Grande Rise-Walvis Ridge system Atlantic) may also explain enigmatic presence polydolopimorphian Cenozoic central Anatolia (Turkey). radical hypothesis that European (Eurasian?) Marsupialiformes have ultimate origin where they dispersed via Africa by Paleocene–earliest Eocene.

Affinities between Asian non-human Schistosoma species, the S. indicum group, and the African human schistosomes.

Schistosoma species have traditionally been arranged in groups based on egg morphology, geographical origins, and the genus or family of snail intermediate host. One of these groups is the 'S. indicum group' comprising species from Asia that use pulmonate snails as intermediate hosts. DNA sequences were obtained from the four members of this group (S. indicum, S. spindale, S. nasale and S. inco...

Cenozoic Expansion of Grasslands and Climatic Cooling

Mountains, ocean currents, forests, and swamps have played an important role in regulating global climate for hundreds of millions of years, but the truly novel event of the Cenozoic was the evolution and expansion of grasslands, with their uniquely coevolved grasses and grazers. Neogene expansion of the climatic and geographic range of grasslands at the expense of woodlands is now revealed by ...

Pacific Ocean and Cenozoic Evolution of Climate

[1] The Pacific Ocean has played a major role in climate evolution throughout the Cenozoic (65–0 Ma). It is a fundamental component of global heat transport and circulation, the dominant locus of primary productivity, and, consequently, the largest reservoir for carbon exchange between the oceans and the atmosphere. A satisfactory understanding of the Cenozoic evolutionary history of the Pacifi...

Neotropical schistosomiasis: African affinities of the host snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Gastropoda: Planorbidae)

Schistosoma mansoni, the blood fluke responsible for human intestinal schistosomiasis in the Neotropics, was imported repeatedly with African slaves during the period 1500–1800. This trematode, and its intermediate host snails of the genus Biomphalaria, are widely distributed across Africa and the disease is thought to have quickly become established in South America and the West Indies because...

1. to determine whether difference in birth body mass influenced growth performance in pipistrellus kuhlii we studied a total of 12 captive-born neonates. bats were assigned to two body mass groups: light birth body mass (lbw: 0.89 ± 0.05, n=8) and heavy birth body mass (hbw: 1.35 ± 0.08, n=4). heavier body mass at birth was associated with rapid postnatal growth (body mass and forearm length) ...
